On Thursday, October 15th, 2020, the secretary of GreenMetric of University of Medan Area, Abdul Karim, S.Si, M.Si became the speaker at the online workshop about Composting Training conducted by SMAN 2 Plus Panyabungan collaborated with Marbisuk Foundation.
The webinar was attended by Sulhan Hamid H. Lubis, M.Pd as the MC, Rini Eka Setiani, M.Pd as the Moderator, Prof. Ir. H. Zulkarnain Lubis, MS. Ph.D as the Head of Marbisuk Foundation, Ir. H. Dahier Lubis, MMA as the Caretaker of the Regent of Mandailing Natal, Prof. Dr. Dadan Ramdan, M.Eng, M.Sc. as the rector of University of Medan Area, Hendri, MPD as the Principal of SMAN 2 Plus Panyabungan, Abdul Karim, S.Si, M.Si as the secretary of GreenMetric UMA.
On his welcoming speech, the Principal of SMAN 2 Plus Panyabungan expressed his gratitude to those who have participated in this webinar. Although the composting training was conducted through an online workshop due to Covid-19 pandemic, he hoped that all the participants would keep their enthusiasm until the end of the event.
” There have been many things we have designed to realize the agro-ecotourism as one of the program of SMAN 2 Plus Panyabungan, namely making a compost house, a seed house, and we are going to create a hydroponic program in the near future,” said the principal of SMAN 2 Plus Panyabungan.
Meanwhile, on his welcome speech, the Rector of the University of Medan Area expressed his appreciation towards all the benefial program conducted by SMAN 2 Plus Panyabungan such as compost house, seeds and others. He said that hopefully the students of SMA 2 Plus Panyabungan would be able to visit UMA to see the making of compost in UMA’s Compost Processing Center. Besides, UMA also has a butterfly sanctuary and mini conservation forest surrounded by fish pond, garden, and rare plants that can be visited by high school students who do fieldtrip to UMA. He also said that UMA was the only private university that got the certicitate from UI GreenMetric World University Rankings as the 17th most sustainable university in Indonesia and as the 303rd world’s most sustainable university.
“I hope the students of SMAN 2 Plus Panyabungan will continue their studies at University of Medan Area to develop their knowledge about compost management, etc.” said the rector of UMA.
Prof. Ir. H. Zulkarnain Lubis, MS. Ph.D, as the head of Marbisuk Foundation expressed his gratitude to University of Medan Area for willing to collaborate with Marbisuk Foundation. He hoped there would be many more program that can be conducted to develop SMAN 2 Panyabungan.
The workshop was continued with the main agenda, namely the explanation about compost processing by the secretary of GreenMetric UMA, Abdul Karim, S.Si, M.Si. It was started by providing an understanding of waste and its types. He said that in organic waste is the main ingredient in compost processing. However inorganic waste could also be recycled to be other benefial products. ” As the realization of UMA’s concern towards the environment, some lecturers and students of UMA has performed community services, particularly in treating waste of landfills in some regencies. i.e. Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, Deli Serdang, Medan, Tanjung Balai And Asahan,” said him
He also added that UMA has a program of waste management by recycling organic waste into compost and aromatic briquettes, and recycling inorganic waste into semi-finished products before pass it to the third party.
