Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Medan Area held an online seminar entitled “Coping With Viruses and Business Opportunities During Covid-19 Pandemic with Ecofriendly Organic Soap” presented by Dr. Maysarah Utami Siregar, MKM on Friday June 5th, 2020 through the Zoom application and live streaming on University of Medan Area’s youtube channel.
The seminar is opened by the greetting speech from the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Medan Area, Dr. Faisal Amri Tanjung, S.ST, MT. The participants who attended the seminar reached 560 participants from various cities in Indonesia. The importance of maintaining health and the dangers of using commercial soap has motivated dr. Maysarah to make organic soap.
Some of the Dangers of commercial soap are as follows:
- SLS(sodium laureth sulfate) SLES (sodium lauril eter sulfat) => foam soap(detergent) = dandruff, cataract, cracked skin.
- Phtalates => making the soap look smooth and hard = hormonal imbalance
- Paraben => preservative = hormonal imbalance
- Triclosan (antibacterial) => accumulated in the body = skin rashes and hormonal imbalance
Handmade soap or organic soap is a kind of soap using a simpler material with a smaller amount of chemicals than commercial soap.
“Handmade soap has the same function as commercial soap in general (i.e. it binds bacteria and viruses with its foam, then damages the structure of germs and dissolves with water),” said Dr. Maysarah Utami Siregar, MKM.
Furthermore, Dr. Maysarah Utami Siregar, MKM explained the process of making organic soap with the ingredients described in the presentation. The seminar ran well and smoothly and at the end of the seminar, question and answer session was opened for participants who wanted to ask questions directly to dr. Maysarah
