The Biology Faculty of Universitas Medan Area has just held a national seminar entitled “The improvement of life quality through the environmental awareness” on Tuesday, October 08th, 2019 at the Convention Hall of main campus of Universitas Medan Area.
The seminar was opened by the rector of Universitas Medan Area, Prof. Dr. Dadan Ramdan, M.Eng, M.Sc, vice-rector for academic field, Dr. Ir. Hj. Siti Mardiana, M.Si, and vice-rector for student field, Muazzul SH. M.Hum.
It was also attended by the Dean of Biology Faculty, Dr. Mufti Sudibyo, M.Si, vice-dean for academic field, Dra. Sartini, M.Sc, vice-dean for student field, Abdul Karim, S.Si, M.Si, chairperson of GreenMetric of UMA, Ida Fauziah, S.Si, M.Si, and the lecturers of Biology Faculty of UMA. Meanwhile, UMA invited the teachers and students of SMA Negeri 1 Gebang Kabupaten Langkat Sumatera Utara as the participants.
The seminar presented the speakers from Universitas Syiah Kuala, Dr. Suwarno, the expert of butterfly conservation program, and Dr. Tengku Kemala Intan, M.Pd, M.Biomed who has good understanding at environmental pollution
The Rector of UMA, Prof. Dr. Dadan Ramdan, M.Eng, M.Sc. in his greeti ng speech stated that the seminar aimed to improve the students’ knowledge about butterflies and their species, and how to conserve them to avoid the extinction of butterfly habitat. UMA has also started to carry out a butterfly conservation program and needs guidance from the expert in order that the program can run in a good way. Moreover, he also expressed his gratitude to Madam Tengku Kemala Intan for explaining how to overcome the environmental pollution in Sumatera Utara.
After that, Dr. Suwarno, M.Si as the speaker delivered the purpose of butterfly conservation. He said that butterfly is a unique, beautiful, interesting, colorful, beneficial, and economical species. From economic perspective, butterfly has species with the cost of 4 million rupiahs for each species. Unfortunately, butterflies are in danger due to their habitat extinction
He also explained differences between butterfly of daytime and butterfly of night time through their morphology, species, taxonomy, and life cycle, and how to do the conservation effort through feeding. Dr. Suwarno, M.Si also explained the stages of butterfly conservation as well as butterfly habitat threats. “The society, non-governmental organization and government needs to take action towards the butterfly preservation by educating, doing research, conservation program, regulations, laws, and management that need to be taken seriously by the government,” he said.
The other speaker, Dr. Tengku Kemala Intan, M.Pd, M.Biomed continued the seminar by explaining how to overcome the environmental pollution. “The environmental pollution is the entry of living things, energy substances, and / or other components into the environment, or changes in the environmental order by human activities or by natural processes so that the quality of the environment drops to a certain level that causes the environment to be less or unable to work properly “, she said.
She also said that it would be a good idea if all schools could make the environmental conservation as one of their subjects because it is a must to teach the students to preserve their environment by saying no to littering, planting trees, waste management, etc.
The seminar was closed by taking the students of SMA Negeri 1 Gebang to walk and see around the green open space, compost house, and trial garden of UMA.
