Faculty of Biology of Universitas Medan Area with PT. Nusantara Siana Eko Solusi (NSES) held a waste processing workshop into compost on Friday 5 May 2019 at the Compost Centre of the Faculty of Biology UMA.
The event was a form of realization of cooperation between the Biology Faculty of UMA and PT. NSES which has established cooperation in March. The compost processing workshop was delivered directly by Mr. Muhammad Yani bin Abu Samah from Singapore and assisted by PT.NSES staff and UMA Faculty of Biology students.
The purpose of the workshop is to build up the awareness in waste management by giving explanation about how to transfer wastes into beneficial products. Organic wastes such as sewage sludge, food scraps, vegetable waste, shrimp waste, sawdust, water hyacinth, palm shells and others could be transferred into eco-friendly fertilizer by adding bio-activator which speeds up the process of composting as well as eliminating the waste odor
“Besides that, the main purpose of waste management in the future is to reduce wastes in Medan, so that Medan is no longer on the list of the dirtiest cities in Indonesia.
“Using simple environmentally friendly technology and its benefits for students is as research material,” said the Dean of the Biology Faculty, UMA, Dr. Mufti Sudibyo, M.Si. Also Mr. Muhammad Yani added that the technology used is non-flammable, very safe to use and the price is not too expensive and the technology can be a solution for household waste management.
