University of Medan Area (UMA) has a high commitment in managing the campus environment to become an environmentally friendly campus. The commitment was proven by UMA to be the only private university (PTS) in North Sumatra that has conservation forest. In addition, UMA has obtained the Bestari campus certificate and the GreenMetric UI certificate.
According to the Chairman of the Haji Agus Salim Education Foundation (YPHAS) Drs HM Erwin Siregar MBA, it shows that UMA has a high awareness in environmental management.
“Alhamdulillah, UMA got the rank of 29th on National Level and 505th on international level based on the final results of the Greenmetric UI Rankings on December 11, 2017,” said Erwin Siregar, on Campus II UMA Jalan Sei Serayu Medan, Saturday (30/6/18).
Erwin said, UMA is the only private university on the island of Sumatra that obtained GreenMetric Rankings. It needs to know that the position of State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU) on GreenMetric Rangkings is above UMA and the University of North Sumatra got the rank of 11th on national level and 234th on international level and followed by Unimed which got the rank of 18th on national level and 389th on international level.
Erwin emphasized that in order to realize the goal as a green campus, and also as an environmentally friendly campus model, UMA has implemented it in various concrete actions.
According to him, waste and good environmental management is one of the assessments of GreenMetric. In addition, toilets in UMA are in clean condition. Many components are assessed. Those achievements becomes the positive values of UMA.
Besides the campus forest, another positive value of UMA campus that makes it become the Bestari campus is the management of campus which makes a number of icons or spots such as Chic Park, Tourism Gardens, the Maintenance of Forest Animals, Fish and Turtles Breeding, and seeing the growth of rare plants is the most interesting activity to do. The good management of the campus environment means that the students already have supporting facilities in the learning process specifically for the faculty of agriculture.
