Five students of University of Medan Area won two silver medals at the International Invention Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) event. It was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on May 9-12. The five students are Mulyadi, Kamaluddin Siregar, Siti Karomah, Dwi Juwita, and Tia Agustina Wati.
The Head of Career and Entrepreneurship Center (PKK) of UMA, Ahmad Yudi, SE, MM as the group leader, on Monday (21/5) said to the reporters that at the ITEX 2018 event, the UMA student team presented the processing of durian seed into yogurt products. This material is displayed for the World Young Inventors Exibition (WYIE) competition category.
“Alhamdulillah, the innovation of UMA students got two silver medals in the event which was attended by 20 countries in the world, each for Biotechnology Healthy category and Special Award from WIP (World Invention Intellectual Property Associations) category,” he said.
The Rector of UMA, Prof. Dr. Dadan Ramdan M.Eng, MSc encourages the UMA academic community to take part in international events. Besides honoring the names of UMA and North Sumatra in the international level, this achievement will also smoothen UMA’s target of achieving A level of higher education institution accreditation (AIPT).
“Kita terus memotivasi mahasiswa untuk tampil di ajang internasional. Bahkan kita siap mengirim mahasiswa mengikuti lomba di Jepang dalam waktu dekat ini,” ucap rektor sambil menambahkan akan segera megurus hak paten inovasi mahasiswa UMA tersebut agar tidak terjadi plagiat.
“We continuously motivate the students to join in international events. We are even ready to send the students to join the competition in Japan in the near future,” said the rector while adding that he would immediately process the patent of UMA Student’s innovation, so that there would be no plagiarism.
One of the students, Kamaluddin Siregar, said that the innovations they presented at ITEX 2018 Malaysia started from fun when they saw the so many durian seeds and potentially became waste. They then conducted various experiments to process durian seeds which are usually wasted into yogurt.
Besides processing durian seeds into yogurt, we also process durian rind which is usually thrown into cotton substitutes material, “said him, who is the student of Agriculture Faculty of UMA.
For this achievement, UMA won two medals at ITEX 2018 Malaysia, Haji Agus Salim Education Foundation (YPHAS) gave appreciation to them in the form of cash, souvenirs and certificates. The appreciation was given directly by the rector of UMA, Prof. Dr. Dadan Ramdan accompanied by Vice Rector III for Student Affairs Muazzul S.H, M.Hum, Head of Student Affairs Bureau Sri Irawati S.Sos, MAP, and Head of Public Relations Department Ir. Asmah Indrawati, MP.
