Students of Faculty of Biology, University Medan Area, carry out a community service by planting 11,000 of mangrove trees in Lubuk Kertang, Berandan Barat district, Langkat, North Sumatra. The program was conducted due to the damage of mangrove forest ecosystem by economic activity and illegal logging by the irresponsible party.
Mufti Sudibyo as the dean and supervisor of the project stated that the existence of mangrove forests contributes to hamper the rate of climate change due to global warming of greenhouse gas effects.
He also added, the function of mangrove plant in there is not directly proportional to the destruction of existing mangrove forests. Again, the societies should be a concern to these circumstances with decreasing the cut down of those mangroves plants.
As for this project, the team intends to share experiences and provide examples of how to develop mangrove forests to the society. Also, they conduct an appealed to fisher men or communities living around the coastline of mutual awareness that mangrove forests are the life saver of life for them.
